 Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month

NOF Launches the new Know My Bones Educational Program!

As a woman, you likely manage your loved ones' health, but how often do you think about your health — your bone health?

NOF with the Know My Bones Council is unified in the goal of encouraging women living with postmenopausal osteoporosis to prioritize their bone health and to seek information that will empower them to fight the disease.

Spokespeople Kathy Reichs, Ph.D., forensic anthropologist, bestselling author, and producer for the TV series, Bones and Felicia Cosman, MD., Clinical Director and Medical Director of the Clinical Research Center at the Helen Hayes Hospital are issuing a call to action — Prioritize your bone health and seek information that will empower you to fight osteoporosis.

Each May the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) celebrates Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. NOF has developed campaigns whose themes, messages and activities build towards the goal of increasing awareness of and action related to osteoporosis. NOF, together with its partners, has strived to make this all too prevalent disease relevant, and ensure that corresponding messages are strong, engaging and encourage action. Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month in May is an opportunity for NOF, along with individuals and partners across the country, to raise awareness of osteoporosis and bone health on a grassroots and national level.

2009 Awareness

May 2009

A Gift from Mothers to Daughters

The theme for NOF's 2009 Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month efforts is A Gift from Mothers to Daughters. Researchers have long cited a clear link between the risk for osteoporosis and family history as evidenced by generations of mothers suffering from osteoporosis and generations of daughters witnessing the effects of the disease — not realizing their own risk. NOF wants to break the cycle with a series of collateral materials that promote bone health and osteoporosis prevention. Of all the gifts that generations of women have passed on to their loved ones, one of the most important is the gift of knowledge about health – especially information about bone health and osteoporosis. These materials will focus on alerting mothers and daughters to the risks and consequences of osteoporosis and encouraging family dialogue about the importance of bone health. Our hope is that the next generation of American women will be armed with knowledge about bone health and osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

NOF is Celebrating 25 years of Standing Tall for You!

2009 marks 25 years of the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s (NOF) pioneering efforts to make bone health a reality and a lifelong priority for all individuals. During that time, NOF has served as the nation’s leading health organization dedicated solely to osteoporosis and bone health. NOF delivers a breadth of information and resources to help both patients and health professionals; fosters understanding of osteoporosis risk factors and prevention and treatment options; drives quality and patient access to health care; and works to advance medical research towards better treatments and ultimately a cure.

Press Release: Family History is Key Risk Factor in Developing Osteoporosis

Previous Campaign Highlights

2008: “Osteoporosis. It’s Beatable. It’s Treatable.”

In May 2008, NOF released the results of a nationwide survey that revealed a concerning low awareness of bone health and risk for osteoporosis in Americans age 45 and older, as well as a lack of conversations regarding bone health between patients in this age group and their health professionals. The survey found the following:

  • Almost 80 percent of Americans 45 and older do not believe osteoporosis is a risk factor in broken bones
  • 40 percent of women and 60 percent of men age 45 and older have little or no concern about their bone health.
  • Almost half of Americans age 45 and older are not aware that a fracture and a broken bone are the same

This survey shows that the millions of Americans at risk for osteoporosis do not know enough about the disease, their personal risk or what they can do to protect their bones.

Also, in 2008, NOF released its Clinician’s Guide to Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis. NOF expanded its guidelines beyond Caucasian postmenopausal women to include African-American, Asian, Latina and other postmenopausal women. It also addressed for the first time men age 50 and older. Updated calcium and vitamin D recommendations could be found in the Guide as well.

2007: "Osteoporosis. It's Beatable. It's Treatable."

To recognize Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month in 2007, NOF developed a Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign and Bone Tool Kit with the theme, "Osteoporosis. It's Beatable. It's Treatable." that address the important issues associated with osteoporosis for different audiences, and encourage people to take action to protect their bone health and prevent osteoporosis.

2006 "Osteoporosis...It Matters"

NOF successfully launched Strong Women Stand TallTM (SWST), a national program to inspire women to come together, celebrate their strength and build strong bodies and futures. SWST ended the year with nearly 6,000 new members, a new Web site (www.strongwomenstandtall.org), and three educational brochures that educate women how to take action to protect their bone health.

2005 "Think You Can Recognize the Face of Osteoporosis...Think Again"

The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) hosted a Congressional Briefing on May 11, 2005, to review Bone Health and Osteoporosis: A Report of the Surgeon General, the first-ever Surgeon General’s report on the topic.

2004 "Osteoporosis. Chances Are...It Could Be You."

The Foundation convened a congressional briefing, “Osteoporosis: Improving Your Community’s Awareness and Prevention.”  Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Representative Shelley Berkley (D-NV) also placed statements in the Congressional Record during the month of May.  Senator Snowe described the enormous burden that osteoporosis places on individuals and the nation and urged passage of two bills to ensure adequate coverage of bone mass measurement she had introduced earlier in the 108th Congress.

Osteoporosis Doesn’t Look Good on Any Body
(Print PSA in English)

This poster, featuring Joan Rivers, highlights the notion that people are making the effort to care for their outward appearance, yet forgetting to take preventative measures to ward of osteoporosis.

OSTEOPOROSIS DOESN'T LOOK GOOD ON ANY BODY.

For a look that's always in, take care of your bone health. Because if we cared about our bones as we do about our appearance, osteoporosis wouldn't be one of the most debilitating diseases for women over 50.
